Decarbonizing society: From awareness to action!
The Challenge
Electricity is increasingly carbon-neutral. And while the European Commission recently underlined the need to drastically increase the electrification rates in Europe, the electricity sector committed to be carbon-neutral well before 2050.
We need to move from a mere 22% of final demand electrified nowadays to up to 60% in a fully decarbonised society. Such targets imply an increasing electrification of final energy demand in all sectors: industry, transport and buildings, as well as the involvement of about 80% of all EU households in actively supporting the deployment of renewables. However, electricity continues to be strongly perceived as a commodity and various barriers to the greater involvement of citizens in energy remain.
In these circumstances, how can we shift the focus to consumers and engage them in the energy transition? In other words, how do we encourage people to go electric, contribute to the electrification targets and keep global temperature rise below 1.5°C?
The Challenger
Eurelectric, the Union of the Electricity Industry, is the sector association which represents the common interests of the electricity industry at pan-European level, plus its affiliates and associates on several other continents. We currently have over 35 full members, representing the electricity industry in 32 European countries.
The team that provides the most promising solution to their challenge will be invited to pitch their solution in front of a panel of executives from European utilities, and receive feedback from these experts!
Eurelectric will also attend the Life After Hack Belgium Pitch event, where opportunities for collaboration and exchange can be crystallised.
