Making the renewable energy switch at the household level.
The Challenge
With the Paris climate agreement, all signing countries promised to commit to concrete efforts that reduce global warming to over 2°C. For Flanders, this means that the energy supply should be integrally CO2 neutral by 2050.
Windmills and solar panels rightfully get a lot of attention: everyone realises that we absolutely need to step it up a notch if we want to realise these goals. But a blind spot in the debate around the transition towards sustainable energy supplies, is marked out by the ‘heath question’. How will we heat-up our homes and buildings in the future, without fuel oil and natural gas? Around 85% of our households energy consumption goes to heating, and more than 90% of our households is using fuel oil or natural gas to do so.
To attain a zero-emission of CO2, about 100.000 households will need to make the switch to renewable energy supplies from now up to 2050.
The Challenger awards
Bond Beter Leefmilieu (BBL) collaborates with a wide range of organisations, citizens, governments and businesses to set the wheels in motion of a transition towards a sustainable, renewable society. They do this by focusing on a shift in energy, mobility, resources, nutrition and spatial planning. They take different approaches simultaneously. In addition to influencing policy, we invest in a growing network of member organisation to strengthen their work. We also set up our own projects and campaigns to boost the transition.
BBL is always on the look-out to collaborate and develop promising project ideas. Involved in a wide variety of projects (energy, mobility, spatial planning, food and circular economy), BBL often partners with non-profit organisations, businesses, research departments and universities, local and national governments and more. To the team that delivers the pitch that best matches their criteria, Bond Beter Leefmilieu can provide help in searching and securing funding by external agencies. They can also offer expertise in developing crowdfunding campaigns, help nascent project developers link up with people in our wide network.
Bond Beter Leefmilieu will also attend the Life After Hack Belgium Pitch event, where opportunities for collaboration and exchange can be crystallised.

EXPERTS
If you want to brainstorm solutions and meet with other people interested in the challenge, then you should talk to Benjamin Clarysse, Energy Policy Officer at Bond Beter Leefmilieu. If there is interest, Benjamin can set up a quick session to brainstorm solutions. Those ideas can then be pitched in the Round-Up Workshop in the ‘Accessible, Clean Energy’ Theme at the end of Day 1, to see if other people want to join you in your project.

About the Energy Societal Theme
We urgently need to speed up the shift toward a cleaner, CO-neutral energy system – but we must do so without compromising on affordability and reliable supply. More than a billion people around the world still lack access to safe, clean energy. Also in Europe, we’re vulnerable to supply problems and price rises. Join us to help accelerate the energy transition!
