About the Water Societal Theme
There was no escaping this summer: the prolonged heat, along with weeks without rain, colored Flanders green, yellow and orange: the color codes to combat water wastage. For the second year in a row. For a water company, this means all hands on deck, above all to ensure the water supply in the future.
Flanders is one of the most water-scarce regions in the world: it has a limited number of large and long rivers and has no lakes. The climate change puts great pressure on our drinking water demand and supply.
5 measures to combat the drought:
- New Source Mix: preserve fresh water in aquifers in the polders and tap into new water sources.
- Optimize water flows: treat and reuse waste water will reduce pressure on drinking water network.
- Underground storage: buffer water reserves will provide greater resilience in periods of water scarcity.
- Collaborate with other drinking companies to share infrastructure for production and distribution to provide a greater security of supply.
- Replacing salt water with fresh water in the soil.
