Environmental Education at School
Empower Students About Climate
Hack Belgium 2019The younger generations are currently mobilizing massively for the climate cause. However, the decision makers' response to their distress call is weak or non-existent. Therefore, the project we are proposing aims to enable young generations living in Belgium to take concrete and responsible actions to help improving the state of the planet and its ecosystems. This project will take place in Belgian primary and secondary schools. It is divided into two parts: first, students and teachers will be made aware of environmental issues through relevant scientific studies whose information will have been made accessible. This sensitization will take place in the form of games adapted to the age of the beneficiaries (board games, posters, challenges between schools...). Secondly, they will be tooled (in a participatory way) to enable them to find and implement concrete, simple and personalized solutions to this crisis. Participatory workshops will be held in schools. This will allow everyone to express themselves on the subject and find concrete and accessible solutions related to these environmental issues. This project is based on the following assumptions: the younger generations are the decision-makers of tomorrow, so it is important to empower them from an early age. In addition, by sensitizing and empowering them, we do the same with their parents. Indeed, what is set up and becomes a habit at school can also turn into a habit at home. In addition, providing content related to the environment will allow teachers to answer more effectively to their students' questions about climate. In addition, making individuals closer to the environment makes them more aware of their condition. Finally, learning while having fun and participating can lead to much better and lasting results over time."

GIMMEH
Give Me My Electronic Health Record
Hack Belgium 2018Watch the pitch here. Your doctor is currently the only one that has access to your medical record. In most Electronic Health Record systems, this information is only stored on the PC of the doctor, instead of somewhere in the cloud. So if you want access to this information, you'll have to go to your doctor. But it's not that he can give that information with you. The best he can do, is send you an email with a subset of the info. This is far from ideal. It's not complete, it's not structured, and it cannot be combined with other data. The Belgium eHealth Organisation is working hard on SUMEHR (Summarised Electronic Healthcare record), which is a summary of important aspects of your health record, and they envision the people to have access into this. It's already a challenge to get the summary of your EHR centralized, from a technical perspective, data ownership perspective and change management perspective. Even if there is progress, patient access to the summary data is low on the priority list, and full data access in a portable format is even lower on that list... So how can we build our Digital Health Twin, if we don't have even access to our own EHR? Google and Apple are offering their Health/Fit components, which could be leveraged as a technology for your Digital Health Twin. They have a possibility to import your medical record. Unfortunately, if you have no structured data file, you won't get far. But there is a solution to move forward. The EHR systems offer export functionality, in a standard Belgium eHealth format, in order to transfer your record to another doctor. With the new GDPR regulations coming in May, everybody will have the right to get access to this data, in a structured format. But of course this format is not compatible with the Apple Health or Google Fit platform. We will build an OPEN SOURCE solution to bridge that gap, so you can take your full EHR back home with you on your next doctor's visit. Download a deck of our work here. If you want to know more about this project, reach out to Emeric via ruben.bentein@merck.com.

Interconnected sets of trade networks for better logistics
Hack Belgium 2018We strive for a transition from traditional linear supply chains to interconnected sets of agile and dynamic trade networks. Imagine the endless possibilities of smart, open and automated systems: faster, cheaper, better and greener logistics around the world. We believe the solution lies in high-quality digital data governance and exchange. Creating an open, digital backbone for data exchange in global trade networks will lead to efficient and sustainable logistics. This will enable disruption of the traditional linear supply chain, evolving into to a set of dynamic networks. We help businesses, governments and industries implement new technologies through a holistic approach: by considering the technical aspect as merely a part of the puzzle. We start from the real-world business and legal requirements, critically assessing how technology could improve the current situation. Download a deck of our work here. Generating drinking water from boat movement
Hack Belgium 2018We want to bring safe cheap drinking water to fishing communities in third world countries. As the fishermen and vessel owners vessels lay out at sea bobbing up and down in the waves, we want to generate drinking water by harvesting the energy from the up & down movement of the boat to power the drinking-water-maker. Son of a Beach
Youth camps for cleaner oceans
Hack Belgium 2018The “Son of a Beach” wants to create “experience workshops” for children between 4 and 15 years with the aim to bring them closer to two main topics:
· less waste and less plastic
· energy of the future
These ‘experience workshops’ will be organized following the ‘circular economy’ concept: for example 1st workshops collection and separation of waste / plastic, 2nd design and build from the waste (e.g. toy car with plastic bottle, small wind mill with bamboo, surfboard with plastic bottles) and 3rd the fun activity. All ‘experience workshops’ will be organized according to the age of the participant and with the objective to have fun while learning about our future.
These ‘experience workshops’ can be held during summer camps, surf camps, school lessons, milieu centrum or as part of NGO programs.

E-Mergency
Reducing time to get paramedic assistance
Hack Belgium 2018An app aimed to optimize the intervention of first aid in case of physical emergency.
If you (or another person) have an accident or physical discomfort, you can send a simultenous pulse to a social group of paramedics (and first aid certified people) and to emergency services(112).
While emergency services take on average 10 to 11 minutes to reach you, you can send out a pulse to you network that is within a short range (geolocalisation). Benefit: the time scale of first help can be reduced significantly. It can be physical help, but if needed it can be other kind of help (eg. drones).
[Collard Gilles] Witnesses can use the app as well either from their own smartphone or with the smartphone of the victim with the help of an emergency button actionable from the locked screen without the need of a password or fingerprint.
The app will contain a list of the AED existing around. The app can also contain bio data.
The added value of our app, in comparison with other existing lies in :
- the scope is not limited to heart attacks or epilepsy but is extended to any kind of physical emergency
- We will only use a network of certified first aid
- App easily actionable via a button on the locked screen
- Double action of the app: sending a pulse to the first aid network and calling 112
- This is the app that sends a pulse to the first aid network and not the 112
- The app is easily actionable via the locked screen
- Light versions can be developed for large companies or big events

Fair Recruitment Training Programme
VR to overcome recruitment bias
Hack Belgium 2018In the job-recruiting system, people are not merely hired on the bases of skill and competences but the bias of the recruiter plays a big role in whether someone gets hired or not. It is generally accepted in science that people always have an subconscious bias. However, people will not admit or acknowledge that they in fact discriminate; if you ask someone to their face whether they discriminate they will always answer no. How might we tackle this problem of biased recruiters? We want to work on it on the level of the Human Resources-departments of companies and recruiting companies like the VDAB. Besides that, we want to tackle the problem from the roots and address universities that educate students that will work in HR later on. How do we want to do this? We would like to develop a training programme to make the recruiters more aware of their bias and change the way they recruit people. We would use Virtual Reality (VR) to have the recruiter interview a multitude of fictional jobseekers. The recruiter writes down the strong-points and whether he/she would hire the fictional jobseeker or not. This data is then analysed to see to what degree the recruiter only looks at competences or to what degree the recruiter has a bias in one of the areas mentioned in the previous slide. If there is a bias, the recruiter is made aware of this, and he/she will follow a training programme to get rid of the bias. After the training programme the recruiter does another couple of interviews with the VR-headset, and based on what they write about the fictional jobseekers we can determine whether the training has worked and whether the bias is less than before. We can do this every couple of years to check whether there keeps being as little bias as possible. Companies would be able to contact us to use the VR-equipment and the trainings. We would bring it to the companies and give a small explanation to the HR managers. The recruiters shouldn’t know what the exact goal is of the VR-interviews, so they don’t pay special attention to bias. In this way, companies and recruiter companies get a realistic view on how biased their employees are.
